Traditions keep memory alive in motion. They give families a rhythm for remembering, teaching, gathering, and welcoming others into Filipino life.

Because the Philippines is culturally and regionally diverse, practices vary among families and communities. The Council celebrates that variety while creating shared spaces where people can learn from one another.

Fiesta Sa Nayon

“Fiesta sa nayon” evokes a community celebration in the village—a gathering shaped by food, music, dance, games, hospitality, and fellowship.

The Council’s annual Fiesta Sa Nayon brings that spirit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The 2026 gathering includes a community potluck, Filipino food, Tinikling, games and prizes, and family activities. Attendance is open, and no ticket or RSVP is required.

Seasonal and Faith Traditions

Many Filipino families observe traditions shaped by Christian faith and local community life. Practices differ, but familiar examples include:

  • Flores de Mayo, a May tradition associated with flowers, devotion, and community gatherings
  • Simbang Gabi, a series of worship services leading toward Christmas
  • Christmas and New Year gatherings centered on family, food, faith, remembrance, and generosity
  • Town and regional fiestas honoring community identity and patron traditions

The Council welcomes respectful learning while recognizing that Filipino-Americans represent different faiths, regions, and personal practices.

Family, Respect, and Hospitality

Culture also lives in everyday customs: gathering around the table, caring for elders, using respectful language, welcoming guests, remembering relatives, and ensuring that no one leaves hungry.

These gestures may appear small, but they carry values across generations.

Filipino American History Month

Each October, Filipino American History Month offers an opportunity to recognize the history, achievements, and continuing contributions of Filipino-Americans in the United States.

For the Council, history begins locally with approximately twenty Filipino-American families who organized in 1979 and secured the association’s charter on December 11, 1980.
